Is this heresy?

I've been a fan of Ruth Rendell forever. A Dark Adapted Eye and the Chimney Sweep's Boy are two of my favorites. But I've really been put off by her works lately. Minotaur was so-so, but I'm forcing my way through Thirteen Steps Down. It strikes me as disjointed, unpolished, incomplete. Which is so not the way I think of her writing that I can only hope that someone spirited a draft from the writer's desk and published it without her knowing.

A friend is reading Adam and Eve and Pinch Me. When I complained about the quality of Thirteen Steps Down, she told me that the one she was reading was no better. It's a shame.
